My reflections for CIP module
Computing & Information Processing (CIP) is a new module to me. It is the first time i'm exposed to computer stuff again after sec2. Needless to say, the contents covered in CIP are more in depth compared to sec2. CIP initially started out as a module i really detest because i self-proclaim i'm an IT idiot. I dun seem to be cut out for IT stuff and all. But as time passes and as weeks go by, i find that hey, CIP isn't that bad after all. In fact, CIP exposes me to IT information which i have little or no knowledge of at first. And now, I'm equipped with the essential IT information!
The syllabus covered, i would say, is very appropriate because i feel that at this level, the degree of information and concepts introduced to us should be just that. No more no less. Just nice. Also, they expose us to not only theory part of IT, but also involve hands-on practical which proved to be so useful in helping us understand the program better. I didn't kind of expect the things we learnt in this module because initially I felt that I was at a loss because IT seriously isn't my forte. But weeks went by, and I kind of adapted to the expectations of this module.
The workshops on MS Word, PowerPoint, Macromedia Dream weaver and Flash were certainly very useful and interesting. For me, I really enjoyed the workshops on Macromedia Dream weaver and Flash as we are given the freedom to create animation and stuff. It was really fun although I had zero knowledge about it at first. These workshops are appropriate in developing our IT hands-on skills because we were given exercises to do with specific instructions to guide us along. Afterwhich, we can play around with the programs and come up with something interesting. Not forgetting that we can consult our tutor whenever we face a problem and she can give us immediate guidance. This made it possible to develop our IT hands-on skills with exercises and guidelines available for us during the workshops. The workshop assignments have substantially increased my knowledge in using word processing and presentation software applications.
Definitely the PBL problems are authentic enough for me to learn better as they kind of exposed me and my group to the problems faced by existing companies in the society now. I feel as though we were really the IT experts to solve their problems. The problems we worked on seemed common in the society and given real-life examples, we were more aware of the problems that people faced. For me, it had helped in working effectively in teams as I had learnt to work with different people and their differences. There was an increase in diversity of views during discussions and analyzing the problems we faced had ultimately helped us work better in a team though I think that teamwork in my team can be improved. The two PBLs also greatly increased my confidence when speaking in front of many people and my presentation skills are definitely greatly improved too.I'm equipped with better problem solving skills after the two PBLs as when encountered with a particular problem, I turn to effective resources for help such as the internet and our CIP textbook. The internet had really helped me a lot in solving my problems as it provides a varsity of information and solutions.
The lecturers and tutors are helpful in my learning because without them, I think I'll still detest CIP as much as I did in the past. Especially my tutor Mrs. Sun, she's always so willing and patient to guide me along. She is approachable which made me more active in the assignments because i know that if I'm faced with a problem, she'll always be around to provide suggestions in helping me solve my problems. I feel that the class size of 40 is not a good size for effective learning to take place. This is especially true for workshops because they're hands-on practical which require us to work on the exercises given. For one single tutor to handle a class of 40 students doesn't seem to be good for the students as we need constant guidance and she wont be able to manage all of us at the same time. Probably the class size can be reduced to 20 students for effective learning to take place.
If there's one thing that I can change in CIP, it will have to be eliminating e-learning for workshops because as mentioned earlier, hands-on practical like workshops should be conducted in class with the tutor around so that whenever in doubt, we can get immediate consultation and guidance from them. This will enable us to have a better and stronger grasp on the programs.
I appreciate CIP module because it had taught me a lot, especially IT theory and concepts. The workshops and PBLs exposed me to better problem solving skills and enable me to understand better what CIP is all about. The assignments have been a valuable learning experience for me.
